Cancer is represented as a Crab in the night sky and is translated from Latin to mean “crab.” According to mythology, the Cancer was a giant crab that Hera sent to conquer Heracles while he was battling Hydra the nine head serpent. All the crab could do is snap at Heracles’ foot and was stomped on and killed. Hera showing her grace placed the crab up into the sky as a tribute for its bravery. But in reality, Cancer originated in Babylonia and was known to be turtles and not crabs for the Egyptians.
Cancer in the night sky is an open cluster of stars and home of Praesepe or “Beehive Cluster” to astronomers. The cluster is 577 light years away and approximately 730 million years old. The cluster has at least 250 stars and possibly up to as much as 350.
Cancer is the dimmest of the 13 constellations of the Zodiac and lies between Leo and Gemini. It is impossible to see Cancer as a crab without a telescope. Even binoculars you won’t be able to see it correctly and looks a like a faint upside-down Y.
Cancer contains two Messier objects discovered by French astronomer Charles Messier in 1771. Cancer’s most famous Messier object is M44, also known as the Beehive Cluster, which is a small star cluster that looks like a swarm of bees.
