The summer solstice occurred on June 20th, but it’s not too late to celebrate! The effects of the heightened solar energy on the longest day of the year linger in the following days, so take advantage of this important time. The summer solstice can make us feel extremely motivated and productive for weeks to come. Like the new moon, it’s a good time to let go of anything that no longer serves us and start preparing for a fresh start.
The summer solstice has been celebrated in religions across the world for thousands of years. This year, why not take part in your own special way? Here are a few suggestions for celebrating the summer solstice:
- Watch the sunrise.
No matter how busy your day is, this is one of the best times of year to get up a little bit earlier and see a beautiful sunrise. Set your alarm, make yourself a cup of coffee or green tea, and sit outside and watch the sky change colors. It’s a peaceful moment to spend with yourself and set a positive tone for the rest of the day.
- Set an intention.
Many people like to set an intention for the month during the new moon. The summer solstice-and the week that follows-is a great time to set an intention for the rest of the year. Don’t be afraid to dream big! Write down your goal and break it down into smaller steps that you can achieve little by little over the course of the year.
- Cleanse.
The summer solstice is the perfect time to cleanse your body and mind-physically, mentally, and spiritually. Be mindful of your diet and eat plenty of fruits and vegetables. Stay hydrated and avoid alcohol or other drugs. Exercise and meditate. Let of go anything in your life that feels negative. Clean out your home, pull up the blinds, and open the windows to let in the fresh air. You might even want to take a dip in the nearest body of water-the ocean, a lake, or a river will do-to fully embrace the idea of cleansing. Even a long soak in a hot bath would be great!
- Plant something.
Plants need the right amount of sunlight to thrive. The summer solstice marks prosperity and abundance-it’s the time of year when lots of delicious fruits and veggies can grow and be harvested. The earth gives us so much-why not give something back? You don’t have to plant an entire garden, but planting something small during the summer solstice can help us feel more connected to nature.
- Spend time relaxing in the sun.
If you can spend an afternoon just laying outside and basking in the sunlight, you’ll get to absorb the sun’s wonderful energy and will feel rested and recharged. Don’t forget to wear sunscreen, of course! Put on your favorite music, close your eyes, and forget the world for an hour.
