How to Achieve a Fresh Start With the New Moon

The new moon is the perfect time for new beginnings. After all, it’s the start of the moon cycle, and its energy can help us look towards a fresh start here on Earth.

The next new moon will occur on July 4, and although you may be busy with holiday festivities, carving out a little time to set your intentions for the rest of the month might be worth the effort. If you take advantage of this time, the power of the new moon can help you manifest your desires and guide you down a new path. Here’s how to properly set your intentions and begin working towards your goals with the energy of a new moon:

  1. Reflect. About a week before the new moon, take a long look at where you are in life. Consider your relationships with family, friends, or your significant other, your career, your health, your finances, and your overall well-being. Doing some relaxing yoga followed by meditation can help you collect your thoughts. Afterwards, be sure to write down your thoughts in a journal-don’t hold back!
  1. Set your intentions. On the day of the new moon, think back on what you wrote down, and then start thinking ahead. Where you want to go from here? What do you want to start doing? What areas of your life do you want to improve? Spend some time doing positive visualization-imagine where you want to be and the steps you’ll take to get there. Grab your journal again and write down your specific intentions for the coming month.
  1. Perform a ritual. “Ritual” might sound complicated or scary, but it could be almost anything! On the night of the new moon, you might choose to do something that will symbolize your goal, or just something to help you get into the right mindset. For example, if you want to clear your head so you’ll be ready to focus and tackle your goals the next day, you might want to take a relaxing, candlelit bath or go for a long walk on the beach.
  1. Take action. The day after the new moon, you’ll want to take a small step in the right direction. This doesn’t have to be anything dramatic or life changing-after all, you’re just getting started on working towards your intentions. If your goal for the next month is to organize your life, you might start by getting a planner or cleaning one room of your house. If you want to reconnect with old friends, you could send a friendly text to someone you haven’t seen in a while.
  1. Keep your intentions alive! Come back to the goals you wrote down at least once a week and take stock of where you are-are you making progress? Have you achieved what you set out to do? Have your desires changed? The energy of the new moon can give you a powerful push in the right direction, but for the rest of the month, it’s up to you to maintain that energy.
